Filmed entirely on location and shot sequentially, British director Lyne with cinematographer, Peter Biziou, capture New York in all its gritty mixed-up charm. The scene in Coney Island on a rainy day with Basinger carrying a bunch of coloured balloons against a grey background is a particular favourite - it is so elegantly crafted that you can tell that the colour of each balloon was painstakingly chosen for maximum effect. As a Wall Street banker, John Gray has adopted a uniform of grey flannel suit, white shirt and sombre tie. But what a suit! It is the perfect combination of structure and drape and sits elegantly when worn unbuttoned. The trousers are pleated and worn with a belt, a useful accessory that can also double as a whip if Elizabeth refuses to crawl across the floor for cash. For casual encounters, John Gray sticks with his eponymous palette in fine gauge knitwear.

That's not to say the movie isn't sexy. I suppose a project of this sort depends crucially on the chemistry between its actors, and Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke develop an erotic tension in this movie that is convincing, complicated and sensual. In the film, they play strangers who meet one day in a Chinese grocery store in Manhattan - Elizabeth, the smart, pretty assistant in a Soho art gallery, and John, the smiling, enigmatic commodities broker. Their first meeting is crucial to the entire film, and it is a quiet masterpiece of implication. She waits by a counter.

Day thinks of faking an upset stomach, a leg cramp, a missed appointment, but there is no escaping this encounter. Now tell me all about it, what kind of book are you writing? But what I discovered raised more questions than answers—which is likely what Day would have wanted. I liked it. I liked him. The film is based on the memoir of the same name by Austrian-American author Ingeborg Day.
