Back to Health A to Z. But for someone with panic disorder, feelings of anxiety, stress and panic occur regularly and at any time, often for no apparent reason. Anxiety is a feeling of unease. It can range from mild to severe, and can include feelings of worry and fear. The most severe form of anxiety is panic. This can create a cycle of living "in fear of fear".
Panic attacks are sudden, intense surges of fear, panic, or anxiety. They are overwhelming, and they have physical as well as emotional symptoms. Many people with panic attacks may have difficulty breathing, sweat profusely, tremble, and feel their hearts pounding. Others have reported feeling like they are having a stroke. Panic attacks can be scary and may hit you quickly. While hyperventilating is a symptom of panic attacks that can increase fear, deep breathing can reduce symptoms of panic during an attack. Focus on taking deep breaths in and out through your mouth, feeling the air slowly fill your chest and belly and then slowly leave them again.
Your primary care provider will determine if you have panic attacks, panic disorder or another condition, such as heart or thyroid problems, with symptoms that resemble panic attacks. You may fill out a psychological self-assessment or questionnaire. You also may be asked about alcohol or other substance use. Not everyone who has panic attacks has panic disorder. If you have panic attacks but not a diagnosed panic disorder, you can still benefit from treatment.
Treatment for panic attacks involves psychological therapy, medication, or both. An anti-anxiety prescription drug such as a benzodiazepine.
