Hey folks, Valkor here. And the folks at Warner Home are back, dragging along that dynamic cat and mouse duo — Tom and Jerry. In the Dog House is a single disc installment centering on episodes involving Spike the bulldog and in a few eps, his son Tike , in a mix of classic shorts and eps from the more modern "Tom and Jerry Tales" - In total you'll get 22 episodes, and I know this is jumping the gun, but I couldn't be happier. Highlights include: Tom's Photo Finish — When Tom bites off more than he can chew with the family's dinner bird, he has to put the blame elsewhere or else he'll be tossed out on his buns; fortunately Spike is near by so that he can pin the blame on him. But unfortunately for Tom, Jerry snaps a picture of him planting evidence and now it's a race to destroy all of the photo before he's busted. Cat Fishin' — Tom sneaks onto private property, to do a little fishing using Jerry as his favorite bait. Now if only he can stay just one step ahead of Spike, who's posting guard duty.
How many new ways can you find to make a frying pan to the head funny and how then can you combine it with a precariously positioned rack of knives which will inevitably be flung at high speeds and pin someone to a wall in a perfect outline of their form? Maybe one flies just a hair below the crotch and the character has to scoot up to dodge it. When he was thrown into the mix, the beatings became a bit more fist-centric, and tended to even out slightly with both Tom and Jerry being on the receiving end though Tom still took the most hurt. When Spike is present, the cartoon usually limits itself to staying within the home, and tends to see Tom or Jerry round a corner only to get slammed by Spike. The dog is less an active participant than he is a conscious torture device content to let the mouse and cat run to him for a beating rather than to seek them out. This might be some classic cartoon violence, but the Spike episodes will always pale in comparison to the one-on-one fights between the titular adversaries.
