The major new feature, Select and Mask, is introduced as the replacement for the Refine Edge panel. With each new tool or set of tools that Adobe introduces, particularly if we lose a tool with which we are familiar, there are bound to be issues. Within the Select and Mask taskspace there are several familiar Photoshop selection tools available: Quick Selection the topmost icon as well as the Lasso and Polygonal Lasso tools nested together in the fourth icon down.

In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to cut out a person from a photo and pop them up in a different background. You can cut a person from a picture taken against a blank wall and transfer them to a background that is more colorful and appealing. To get started, we will have our picture ready and this is where we shall be cutting a person and placing them on a different background. The intention is to make them look as though they took their portrait outdoors. The lighting will be exactly as it is. From there, we will increase the brush size to approximately 45 and then take the hardness down a little bit. We can then paint on the subject that we have.
If you want to select a subject to remove its Background, you can use a combination of a bunch of different Selection Tools located in the Select and Mask dialogue. This option will only be available on version 5. The Quick Selection Tool will guess-select a section of your subject based on where you paint. The Refine Edge Tool works well on fine areas like Hair. The Brush Tool allows you to paint in any general areas the selections might have missed.
