They bring life-saving equipment, rescue personnel and paramedics directly to patients to help reduce disability and improve their chances for survival. Helicopters have been an integral part of Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue program since our first was acquired in Over the years, a Helicopter Rescue Team HRT made up primarily of volunteers, was developed and has proven vital to the many successful Search and Rescue missions. These volunteers purchase most of their own equipment and often pay for their own specialized training in addition to donating a great deal of their own time.
The folks of search and rescue may just be the nicest people you never want to meet on trail. In Washington alone, they conduct more than missions a year to assist lost or injured outdoor enthusiasts. Luckily, supporting search and rescue is as easy as donating your spare change or your spare time. The equipment involved in complex rescue missions is extensive. Most of the equipment is funded by private donations, not tax money like most people think, so this is a real opportunity for you to make a difference.

You can learn more in the WHAT we do pages. King County Search Dogs train a lot! It takes eighteen months or more of training several times a week to develop a reliable airscent or trailing dog. Continued training is then required to pass periodic re-certification tests. Many KCSD members are respected search dog experts who in turn teach throughout the northwest and around the world. KCSD volunteers are available for missions 24 hours a day, seven days a week and come from all walks of life.
Sometimes, they need to be carried or helicoptered out. Then, there are the times when friends and families mourn as rescuers recover a body. Volunteers contributed the vast majority of that time, said Sgt. John Adams, who heads the search and rescue unit. Those numbers also include people reported missing in cities and suburbs as the result of a mental health issue, such as dementia. Most missions are resolved quickly, Adams said. In recent memory, only two people have never been found.
