You're spoilt for choice when planning a tribute concert to Australia's greatest songwriter, but that surplus of classic songs doesn't always make things easier. For two gigs at Melbourne's Forum Theatre last November, Clare Bowditch nabbed two of the best and best known in Deeper Water and To Her Door, Katy Steele wasted one of her choices with the live favourite, but average, Every F…ing City she redeems herself with her second song , while nephew Dan Kelly went for a deep cut with the surf rocker Crosstown. Forget the song choices because it's the performances that matter. Naylor nails Before Too Long, young songstress Megan Washington shows her soft side with an a cappella version of Meet Me in the Middle of the Air then rocks out on Everybody Loves You Baby, and the Panics' Jae Laffer's vocals and restrained acoustic performances suit a bracket of achingly poignant Kelly classics. The spoken-word performance of Everything's Turning to White by Magic Dirt's Adalita, not long after the death of her bandmate Dean Turner, is also touching - then she completely vamps up Sweet Guy. That's a highlight, but this two-disc memento of those shows, which ends with Kelly himself performing Leaps and Bounds, is stolen lock, stock and smokin' vocals by Dan Sultan.
In tribute, the Triple J radio network put on a massive show in Melbourne to celebrate his legacy by providing a stage for a number of other artists largely big in Australia, but unknown in the rest of the Western market to showcase both their own talents and the songwriting skills of Kelly himself. The concert was recorded and released to acclaim as a double disc, with an additional disc of new material from Kelly. What resulted was a nice lineup of artists from around the stylistic horn, all taking a couple of songs of Kelly 's and both reworking them to their own style, and reworking their own style to fit the songs. Despite some messy audio the vocal mix is surprisingly low and the white noise surprisingly high in the songs , the artists do good work with the material. Megan Washington steals the show early on with powerful vocals that rise above the audio mess in a pop format, but she's followed almost immediately by Paul Dempsey and a tinkling, twinkling country song. Clare Bowditch contributes something of a female Springsteen sound, Ozi Batla provides a more nuanced version of Kelly 's work, and Missy Higgins provides an excellent and excellent-sounding bit of crooning and acoustic piano that brings the sound back to a more intimate nature.

Two discs were recorded at two live concerts, sponsored by national radio station, Triple J , on 13 and 14 November at the Forum Theatre. The concerts celebrated Kelly's 30th year as a recording artist and were organised by Richard Kingsmill , musical director at Triple J. Kingsmill invited a variety of Australian artists to choose tracks to perform. The third disc consists of Kelly's originals of most of the live tracks. He is one of our songwriting greats and worthy of celebrating".
