I would give anything I own Give up my life and my heart, my home I would give everything I own Just to have you back again. You may lose them one day Someone takes them away And they'll never hear the words you have to say. Quiero recibir notificaciones de artistas destacados y noticias. You sheltered me from harm You kept me warm You kept me warm You gave my life to me You set me free You set me free The finest years I ever knew Were all the ones I spent with you I would give anything I own Give up my life and my heart, my home I would give everything I own Just to have you back again You taught me how to love And what it's of What it's of You never said too much but still you showed the way And so I knew From watching you Nobody else can ever know The part of me that can't let go I would give anything I own Give up my life and my heart, my home I would give everything I own Just to have you back again Just to touch you once again Is there someone you know You're loving them so But taking them all for granted?

I was staying with a friend in Canada. At the time, there was a lot of violence in Jamaica, so the words meant something to us. I loved the song so much and wanted to bring something to it that people would remember, so I reached inside myself for the vocal. A couple of weeks later I did Top of the Pops for real. I was on the programme 14 times in all with this song and its follow-up Crying Over You, appearing alongside people like Elton John and Hot Chocolate. When the song became a British No 1, Bob Marley called to congratulate me. There were a lot of Jamaican songs in the British charts in that period.

We apologize for the inconvenience...

Although initial listeners may have interpreted it as a song about a broken relationship, Gates would later reveal that it was about the death of his father. So I decided to write and record 'Everything I Own' about him.

Everything I Own

Get a fresh start. Ian McCann. Report a mispronounced word. It has been crooned so often to a warm Jamaican rhythm that it would be easy to assume that it has always been a reggae song. It appears straightforward: boy loses the love of his life, expresses deep regret, longs for her return. The song was written by David Gates, the singer of Bread, a group who were airbrushed from rock history because they were never hip or rebellious.

"Everything I Own" is a song written by David Gates. It was originally recorded by Gates's rock band Bread for their album Baby I'm-a Want You. Although.

The tune was David Gates' tribute to his father. The love he had been missing was parental, not romantic.
