Unlike the first part of Red Dead Redemption, in which the level of detail on the PS3 and Xbox was significantly different, the sequel on all four platforms looks the same worked out. The power of the console primarily affects the resolution and image resolution effects, such as shadow quality and depth of field. Behind it, the PlayStation 4 Pro, which uses a technology reminiscent of chess rendering. DF noted that the Temporal anti-aliasing technology used by Rockstar distorts some pixels, which is noticeable on 4K monitors. According to experts, Red Dead Redemption 2 does not use a dynamic resolution resolution system — the number of pixels is fixed on all versions of the game. On the standard Microsoft console, RDR 2 has more blues, and there is noise in the image. These deficiencies can be noticed when considering foliage or shadows.
PlayStation 4 - and latterly, PS4 Pro - have taken centre-stage in Red Dead Redemption 2's pre-release marketing campaign, meaning we have a pretty decent idea of how Rockstar's latest epic presents on Sony hardware. Today, we can discuss the Xbox One versions of the game, and the key takeaway is this: if you're looking for the very best RDR2 experience, Xbox One X is the go-to platform for this game. Rockstar's stunning technological achievement runs at native 4K on the X, and also delivers the smoothest performance. Bearing in mind just how far Rockstar is pushing current-gen hardware, that's a stunning achievement. With that said, while there are key differences between the four different console versions, the level of commonality in terms of the visual feature set is worth emphasising. Long-time Digital Foundry readers may remember that the original Red Dead Redemption saw a reduction in environment detail - specifically with foliage - on PlayStation 3, with Xbox delivering richer landscapes. There are no such differences that we could spot with the sequel.
While the Xbox One X is by far the most powerful console on the market, a marketing deal between PlayStation and Rockstar had some thinking the differences wouldn't be all that noticeable. Frame rate is also very important, and the order of quality is more or less the same, but with the Xbox One actually offering a slightly smoother experience than the PS4. Given the higher resolution of the Xbox One X version of Red Dead Redemption 2, the better frame rate is a surprise and a nice bonus for owners of that console. The full comparison by Digital Foundry goes into plenty more detail. You can watch the video comparison just below, which highlights the differences quite clearly.
