What Is Fascism?

and

A history lesson for those who believe the socialists and communists of Antifa are polar opposites of the despicable neo-Nazis here in the U. In reality, the conflict between these two groups is an internecine war between two branches of the same socialist tree. Both groups aspire to achieve a socialist and totalitarian government with complete control over every aspect of life. Nazis deserve our contempt and derision, there is no question about it. But the socialists and communists of Antifa should not be exempt from the same just because they are currently at war with them.

Fabian socialism is the dream. Fascism is Fabian socialism plus the inevitable dictator. Resources are redistributed for vote-buying welfare schemes, patronage style earmarks, and graft by unelected bureaucrats, quid pro quo with unions, issue groups and legions of lobbyists. In Argentina, everyone acknowledges that fascism, state capitalism, corporatism — whatever — reflects very leftwing ideology. Eva Peron remains a liberal icon. His proposed infrastructure bank is just the latest gyration of corporatism.

At a time when conservative governments, the Murdoch press and their corporately funded think-tank supporters run down university departments of history in this country , the need for careful interpretations of the past has never been more evident. At stake is nothing less than the meaning of twentieth-century history and the historical origins of modern ideologies. Whether out of ignorance or on political grounds, the shape of the political spectrum - from left to right - is being challenged by revisionists backed by vested interests that seek to undermine the welfare state. This revisionism has been gaining ground for years in the right-wing parallel universe in the United States. It is now going mainstream in Australia courtesy of Sky News , which recently hosted a self-identified Nazi , instigating a predictable controversy. But now it is Sky 's own journalists who are rewriting history - this time, by insinuation rather than outright scandal.

In its intense nationalism , mass appeal, and dictatorial rule, Nazism shared many elements with Italian fascism. However, Nazism was far more extreme both in its ideas and in its practice. In almost every respect it was an anti-intellectual and atheoretical movement, emphasizing the will of the charismatic dictator as the sole source of inspiration of a people and a nation, as well as a vision of annihilation of all enemies of the Aryan Volk as the one and only goal of Nazi policy. Nazism had peculiarly German roots. It can be partly traced to the Prussian tradition as developed under Frederick William I — , Frederick the Great —68 , and Otto von Bismarck —98 , which regarded the militant spirit and the discipline of the Prussian army as the model for all individual and civic life. These two traditions were later reinforced by the 19th-century adoration of science and of the laws of nature, which seemed to operate independently of all concepts of good and evil. The defeat and the resulting disillusionment, pauperization, and frustration—particularly among the lower middle classes—paved the way for the success of the propaganda of Hitler and the Nazis.

Nazism was socialism. Adolf Hitler self-identified as "Socialist. Modern socialists use the terms "Nazi" and "Fascist" to lie about what Hitler actually said. There was no "Nazi Party. Hitler and his party touted "Socialism" by the very word in voluminous speeches and writings.

A s an economic system, fascism is socialism with a capitalist veneer. The word derives from fasces, the Roman symbol of collectivism and power: a tied bundle of rods with a protruding ax. In its day the s and s , fascism was seen as the happy medium between boom-and-bust-prone liberal capitalism, with its alleged class conflict, wasteful competition , and profit-oriented egoism, and revolutionary Marxism , with its violent and socially divisive persecution of the bourgeoisie. Nevertheless, a few industries were operated by the state. Where socialism abolished all market relations outright, fascism left the appearance of market relations while planning all economic activities. Where socialism abolished money and prices, fascism controlled the monetary system and set all prices and wages politically. In doing all this, fascism denatured the marketplace.

Totalitarianism is a political concept of a mode of government that prohibits opposition parties, restricts individual opposition to the state and its claims, and exercises an extremely high degree of control over public and private life. It is regarded as the most extreme and complete form of authoritarianism. Political power in totalitarian states has often been held by rule by one leader which employ all-encompassing propaganda campaigns broadcast by state-controlled mass media. Totalitarian regimes are often marked by political repression , personality cultism , control over the economy , restriction of speech , mass surveillance and widespread use of state terrorism. Historian Robert Conquest describes a "totalitarian" state as one recognizing no limits to its authority in any sphere of public or private life and which extends that authority to whatever length feasible. The concept was first developed in the s by both Weimar jurist and later Nazi academic Carl Schmitt and, concurrently, by the Italian fascists.
