During a spirited week fundraising period, candidates across the country competed in honor of a local boy or girl who is a blood cancer survivor to raise the most funds to ensure a world without blood cancers. Candidates and their campaign teams were judged solely on fundraising success, each dollar counting as one vote. Their totals are then considered for the national title. The national titles, to be announced this summer, will be awarded to the top fundraisers in the country. Finding cures for cancer takes us all, and we need your help. I jumped at the chance to participate in MWOY and it was truly a life changing experience. I've experienced both. I highly recommend the fundraising challenge so that soon no one will have the cancer challenge! I did not! But I surprised myself! How did I do it?
The program featured 2 distinguished speakers who shared their incredible journey and experience with blood cancers. He then spoke on the partnership between LLS and research institutions and what new therapies are bringing hope to patients thanks to this partnership. The second speaker, Man of the Year candidate and Leadership Committee Co-Chair Andrew Dale , told the story of his own blood cancer diagnosis and how he credits his survivorship to those who came before him who donated to and fundraised for LLS. The night concluded with the announcement of the winners of the coveted Man and Woman of the Year titles. The Woman of the Year title was awarded to Randi Kaefer , a cancer survivor and mother of two. Charlie Schlatter , an actor with chronic myeloid leukemia, an incurable but highly treatable blood cancer, took home the Man of The Year award.
