But that plot description doesn't begin to do justice to this movie, which is all about language and timing and loyalty and betrayal, and is very smart and very funny. The movie takes place on the asphalt outdoor basketball courts of Los Angeles - on Venice Beach, in the Crenshaw neighborhood, in Watts and wherever else money is wagered on the outcome of the game. It stars Wesley Snipes as a black basketball hustler whose other jobs are suffering because of the downturn in the economy, and Woody Harrelson as a white guy from out of town who uses his goofy look floppy shorts, backwards cap and a distracted grin to lure victims into betting on his game. Neither one of these guys hustles basketball purely for the enjoyment of the game. Snipes does it to make money his wife is on his case and Harrelson does it at least partly because he's a compulsive gambler. What the movie knows is how the game is played in the tough urban circles where these guys operate. The director, Ron Shelton , who also wrote the screenplay, knows how his characters talk and sound, and how they get into each other's minds with nonstop taunting and boasting.

Despite the alliance, the two continually bickerówith each other and their significant others. Here are some elevating facts about the hit film, which arrived in theaters 25 years ago today. The Bull Durham writer-director admitted that he is never that fast with his writing. It helped that Shelton already had the basic idea of his movie in mind, and was an L. Denzel Washington was dead set on playing Malcolm X next and turned them down. Shelton considered Cylk Cozart for the lead role , too. Ultimately, Cozart was cast in the role of Robert.

It stars Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson as streetball hustlers. Billy Hoyle is a former college basketball player who makes his living by hustling streetballers who assume he cannot play well because he is white. Billy never degrades his race when joining in on pickup games; he simply allows his opponents, most of whom are black, to falsely believe they have a natural advantage over him due to his race and clothing style. Such a player is Sidney Deane, a talented but cocky player who is beaten twice by Billy, once in a half court team game and later in a one-on-one shootout for money. Billy and his Puerto Rican live-in girlfriend, Gloria Clemente, are on the run from mobsters because of a gambling debt. A voracious reader, making note of obscure facts, Gloria's goal in life is to be a contestant on the television show Jeopardy! Sidney wants to buy a house for his family outside the rough Baldwin Village neighborhood.
