The United States is in the middle of a historically unprecedented opioid epidemic. Today, more people die of drug overdoses than any other form of accidental death, and opioid overdose rates surpass historic peak death rates from human immunodeficiency virus HIV , gun violence, and motor vehicle accidents. In , 4. The epidemic has received additional fuel and urgency from the rise of extremely potent synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, carfentanil, and others. These synthetic drugs are often consumed unknowingly, mixed in illicit street heroin or compounded in fake versions of prescription opioids.

The question surrounding suboxone is a simple one: Is it a good idea to treat opioid addiction with another opioid? Opioid abuse is well-known as a scourge across the country by those addicted to them, as well as police, doctors, rehab facilities, and even the federal government. Of course, because opioid abuse has become such a major problem, there is, obviously, a number of counter-strategies to help fight this epidemic. The withdrawal symptoms of opioids are often severe enough to send people right back into use without proper treatment. Luckily, there is a treatment specifically made for recovering opioid addicts. That treatment is suboxone, a synthetic opioid that works as a moderate-strength painkiller just as other prescription drugs do. But while it technically works similarly to other opioid painkillers, suboxone is most frequently used as a treatment for opioid addiction and abuse.

People, especially young adults, may perceive prescription medications to be safer because they are obtained legally, but abusing these drugs can be just as harmful as their illicit counterparts. This is especially so when you consider the rising number of people who are purchasing a prescription drug called Suboxone — an alternative to opiates like Heroin. Suboxone is used in the medical field as a tool to help opiate addicts safely withdraw and stay clean.

The film dissolves in your mouth. Suboxone contains two drugs in each film: buprenorphine and naloxone. Studies show that Suboxone is effective for reducing opioid misuse. How well a drug such as Suboxone performs is partly assessed based on how long people stay in treatment. Yes, Suboxone is a controlled substance. This means that it has an accepted medical use, but it may cause physical or psychological dependence and may be abused. The government has created special rules for how schedule III drugs can be prescribed by a doctor and dispensed by a pharmacist.

Buprenorphine and methadone, both being opioids, activate the opioid mu receptors on nerve cells. The half-life can vary from 24 to 60 hours for buprenorphine, and from 8 to 59 hours for methadone. The half-life is the amount of time a drug stays in the body before its concentration in the plasma drops by half. The long half-lifes of buprenorphine and methadone account for their usefulness in treating opioid dependence. Simply put, these drugs lack the peaks and troughs that are associated with short-term opioids, like heroin—swings in drug plasma levels that can cause overdose and withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine is a partial agonist; methadone, like heroin, is a full agonist.

Dr William Lowenstein. - Food and Drug Administration FDA approved two sublingual buprenorphine products for the treatment of opioid dependence: Subutex, which is buprenorphine, and Suboxone, a mixture of buprenorphine and naloxone.
