The modern Cherokee is something of a controversial vehicle among the Jeep faithful. Aside from the like-nothing-else looks, the classic Cherokee was a venerated nameplate, and many question whether the modern interpretation is worthy. Truth be told, the doubters won't likely change their minds, but the days of solid axles and old inline-sixes are over. It's also been upfitted with the optional 3. Otherwise, it's pretty basic. No active safety systems, no dual-zone climate control, no keyless entry, or any of that stuff.
And while it does offer a lot of workhorse capability for this class, it fails to get a lot of the day-to-day basics right. The list of flaws is long. Performance and fuel economy from the four-cylinder engine is pathetic. It struggles and feels underpowered, while returning only 22 mpg overall, which makes the Cherokee one of the least fuel-efficient models in this category. The V6 is far more pleasant and is definitely the better choice, but it still isn't particularly quick. A new nine-speed automatic transmission may give the Cherokee bragging rights, but it delivers rough, unrefined, and ill-timed shifts.
The Good On paper it's got the most off-road capability in its class. The Cherokee comes with the excellent Uconnect system. The Cherokee has much less cargo space than competitors and the Trailhawk trim line suffers a bit on the pavement. The Bottom Line If you expect to go off-road, the Trailhawk is a great choice. However, if you plan to stay in civilization, the top-of-the-line Overland trim line may be the better choice. Be respectful, keep it civil and stay on topic.
I reviewed the Cherokee Limited when it first came out and liked it a lot. This Trailhawk package is now the top-of-the-line, price-wise.

Nature did not agree with our plans. My soaking head was hanging out the window not for the fun of it, but rather because I was carefully watching the front fender as the Trailhawk inched passed an oft-gouged maple tree trunk to the left. I could tell … but by how much? The right front wheel raised a few more inches before dropping back down into the muck as the left finally crested a large rock it had been climbing in reverse. This makes it a car-based crossover.
