The Witch Is Dead" -- came quickly, but Arlen felt the score needed a big ballad. As he later said, "It was as if the Lord said, 'Well, here it is, now stop worrying about it! He thought it was simply too big and too grand for a teenage girl from Kansas. But after consulting with Ira Gershwin , Harburg changed his mind and gave Arlen 's song its title and its lyrics. The song won an Academy Award for Best Song that year and went on to become the theme song for singer Judy Garland , who, of course, was the teenage girl from Kansas in the movie. The song itself starts with an octave leap, a leap that embodies the hopes of all people who long for a happiness that can never be theirs, and slowly, phrase after phrase, it descends back down to the tonic through harmonies that start in the major but turn more and more to the minor.

Everyone has a favorite memory from The Wizard of Oz but the soundtrack has also become famous and is still powerful in music today. It is not often that a song can stand the test of time but the featured song in The Wizard of Oz has gone on and is in the heart of many movie fans ranging in ages from young to old. The lyrics have a special place in the hearts of everyone who can remember gathering around to watch the now iconic and classic film. Did your favorite not make the list? Tuesday 6th June At the very end of Sunday's One Love Manchester concert, after the big celebrity singalong, Ariana Grande took to the stage for a solo encore and sang a highly emotional version of Over the Rainbow. It was the perfect song for the moment - a song well known to everyone watching, one that speaks to young and old alike, always bringing with it a universe of hope and optimism against a backdrop of yearning. And at that moment, in front of those fans, it reduced both Ariana and her audience in Old Trafford and watching at home to tears. It's not the first time that this Oscar-winning song has offered hope and consolation to people in extreme circumstances.

About five minutes into the film, Dorothy sings the song after failing to get Aunt Em , Uncle Henry , and the farm hands to listen to her story of an unpleasant incident involving her dog, Toto , and the town spinster, Miss Gulch Margaret Hamilton. Aunt Em tells her to "find yourself a place where you won't get into any trouble". This prompts her to walk off by herself, musing to Toto, "Some place where there isn't any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be.
