In Euclidean plane geometry , a tangent line to a circle is a line that touches the circle at exactly one point, never entering the circle's interior. Tangent lines to circles form the subject of several theorems , and play an important role in many geometrical constructions and proofs. Since the tangent line to a circle at a point P is perpendicular to the radius to that point, theorems involving tangent lines often involve radial lines and orthogonal circles. A tangent line t to a circle C intersects the circle at a single point T. For comparison, secant lines intersect a circle at two points, whereas another line may not intersect a circle at all.

Most geometry so far has involved triangles and quadrilaterals, which are formed by intervals on lines, and we turn now to the geometry of circles. Tangents are introduced in this module, and later tangents become the basis of differentiation in calculus. The theorems of circle geometry are not intuitively obvious to the student, in fact most people are quite surprised by the results when they first see them.

Segment CD is tangent to the circle with center O, at D. Point A is in the interior of the circle, and segment AC intersects the circle at B. Here are the things I tried. First, I extended AB to a point on the circle and solved for the length of the extended segment using tangent-secant formula for circles; I found it to be 5 units.
