Is It a Cyst or a Boil? Learn the Signs

Bruce Infected Cyst, Double Super Slo-Mo!
watch the youWhen bacteria infect a hair follicle or oil gland, a red, painful, pus-filled bump can form under the skin. This is known as a boil. A boil is usually very painful because of the pressure that develops as it grows bigger. As a boil matures, it enlarges, and its center fills with pus. This pus-filled center is called the core. Eventually, the boil comes to a head, meaning a yellow-white tip develops on top of the core. Do not pick at, squeeze, or try to open a boil in any way.
If you have a boil, try to avoid popping or squeezing it since that can make it worse. Instead, heat a clean and damp washcloth in the microwave for seconds. Make sure it is not scalding hot and apply it to your boil for up to 20 minutes a day to help the boil naturally drain. You can also dip a clean cotton swab in some tea tree oil, which is a natural antiseptic, and then lightly dab your boil times a day. If the boil is really painful or more than 2 inches in diameter, go see your doctor.
Boils and cysts can both look like bumps on your skin. The main difference between a cyst and a boil is that a boil is a bacterial or fungal infection. A cyst is a smooth, round, closed sac under your skin filled with fluid or semisolid material.

At some point in your life, most people will have experienced a condition called a boil also known as an abscess or furuncle. Draining these painful skin infections can be tricky and is typically best left to a medical professional. This is especially true if the boil is on the face, neck, hands, ankles, genitals, rectum , or any vulnerable area of skin as it would likely need to be drained by a specialist in an operating room. The same would apply if you have diabetes or have a compromised immune system. Superficial boils that affect fleshy parts of the skin — think the upper leg or torso — are more routinely drained as an in-office procedure. However, even some of these require surgical care if they are large or especially deep.
I had a boil lanced 1 week ago by the doctor. It still has not gone away. It filled with pus again. I have been dizzy and had a sinus-type headache for a few days now. The boil is not red just still has pus and raised. Ad Mom of 2 from Westland. Add your voice!

Some forums can only be seen by registered members. I just had two different boils lanced last night, and i want to make sure that i take care of them correctly. I was told to change the bandages twice a day and to apply warm compreses. I want to make sure they go away for good, so any advice would be great Change the bandages twice a day and apply warm compresses. Also, there's no guarantee they won't come back. They might, or might not.

As a boil matures, it typically has a visible central core of pus. Your boil may heal without the pus draining out, and your body will slowly.
