On Tuesday, Wilson Middle School in Cedar Rapids went into a full lockdown as students huddled in corners and teachers blocked doors. It wasn't a drill, and it turned out to be nothing more than an unsubstantiated rumor according to a letter the school district sent to parents. Some parents say they first heard about the shooting from text they got from their kids before the district sent out notices. Those parents went and picked up their kids. At Wilson Middle School we believe that education is the shared responsibility of the school, home, and the community and that the learning environment should be on of security, dignity, and respect. Wilson offers twenty-five minute intervention periods five days per week that offer re-teaching of critical skills and learning expectations to students who have shown to have deficits. During this time students who have proven their understanding of essential learning items have the opportunity to participate in enrichment opportunities in core and non-core areas. Every student is assigned to a location. In addition, we offer Program for Academic and Creative Talent PACT programming to 6, 7 and 8 grade students, an advanced math course for our 6 grade students, and several sections of core instruction where teachers co-teach to provide additional teaching resources to all students. A number of co-curricular activities are available for students who attend Wilson Middle School. Competitive athletics for students in grades 7 and 8 grade, instrumental and vocal music ensembles that perform publicly throughout the year, competitive show choir chosen by audition, intermural activities for 6 grade students, as well as, clubs and organizations like art club, theatre, drama, and student leadership.
